Artist in Residence Programs

Award-winning author, The Word Girl, Sally Miller will visit your school for an Artist in Residence Program that meets your school's scheduling needs. As an Artist in Residence, Sally Miller will:

  • Visit individual (or combined classrooms
  • Offer writing projects (for before and after her visit)
  • Conduct All School Assemblies

During her visit, The Word girl will offer an unforgettable learning experience for your students. They will be able to get to know a published author, ask her questions, show her their own word creations, interact with her in creative nurturing environments. During the process they will rediscover the wonder of words, the practical side of the publishing world, and ways to submit some of their own words for publication.

For further information on specific services offered, see below.

Classroom Visits

The best part about having The Word Girl, award-winning author Sally Miller, come to your school is when she interacts with your students. In small one classroom settings, or in combined class settings The Word Girl is able to connect with and inspire young minds.

The Word Girl candidly shares with your students what the writing life is like; and how they can begin their own writing journeys. They are able to ask questions of a published author, learn about the publishing world, and create their own word projects. With lots of hands on, crazy, creative, funny and smart activities, these small group interactions with The Word Girl are always a favorite.

Creative Writing Projects

The Word Girl sends creative writing projects to your teachers to precede and follow up on her visit. All of the projects are designed to perfectly compliment and enlarge your current English curriculum.

These projects are engaging, dynamic and students love doing them. They include everything from writing I AM . . . poems, to rediscovering writing devices like onomatopoeia, metaphor, and meter.

How Do Words Become A Book?

As part of an Artist in Residence Program, or as a one hour all school assembly, The Word Girl will take your students on a wondrous journey from words scratched on a paper to beautiful bound book.

The birth of a book can be a mysterious - even elusive - event. The Word Girl demystifies the process, teaching your students about: editors, agents, publishing houses, marketing teams, book processing & distributing.

After this assembly (which can be used in individual classrooms as well) a book will never look the same to your students!
